How to Get to Cozumel
The island is served by the Cozumel International Airport and is also connected to the mainland by various ferry services. The ferry ride from Playa del Carmen takes about 45 minutes.
The most important town on Cozumel is San Miguel, the municipal capital. San Miguel offers many hotels, travel agencies, restaurants, and shops. There are also several hotel complexes located on different beaches of the island.

The main activity on the island is tourism, especially diving. The surrounding waters are considered among the best places for this activity. Various agencies offer diving tours for beginners and professionals alike. Diving in the Cozumel reefs is a must-do for any visitor.
The island is home to the Cozumel Reefs National Park, spanning 11,800 hectares, which protects part of the important Caribbean coral barrier. Many of the best dive sites are located within the park.
Popular diving spots in Cozumel include: Punta Sur, Palancar, Chankanaab, North Paradise Reef, Punta Tunich, Punta Dalila, Tormentos Reef, Santa Rosa, Yocab, and Las Palmas.
Cozumel Beaches
The island of Cozumel boasts several beaches, some busy and others more secluded. Among the notable beaches are:
San Francisco Beach: This is the most traditional and popular beach. It has white sand and calm waters. It offers many services for visitors and is located 14 km south of the town.
San Juan Beach: A calm beach located 5 km north of the town.
Santa María Beach: A peaceful beach near the Chankanaab Lagoon, with fine white sand and palm trees. Ideal for relaxing.
Encantada Beach: One of the busiest beaches on the island, very close to the El Caracol Archaeological Zone.
Hernán Beach: This beach is protected by small islands and is located near the Castillo Real archaeological zone.
Archaeological Sites in Cozumel
Castillo Real: These Mayan ruins are located on the eastern side of the island. The site consists of a pyramid base, a temple, and a lookout tower. The area offers stunning views.
El Caracol: The ruins are well-preserved and it is said that El Caracol was built by the Mayans to signal the presence of strong winds, functioning like a giant whistle when the winds increased.
San Gervasio: This is the most important archaeological site in Cozumel. It housed the temple to the Goddess Ixchel (goddess of fertility) and was a pilgrimage center for the Mayans.
Cozumel and the Riviera Maya
Cozumel is most easily reached from Playa del Carmen via a 45-minute ferry. It is also close to Cancún and forms part of the Riviera Maya.
