Sumidero Canyon: How to Get There, Excursions, and Tours
The Sumidero Canyon is one of the main attractions in Chiapas State.
The Sumidero Canyon receives thousands of visitors each year and is considered one of Mexico's natural wonders.
One of the classic excursions from San Cristóbal de las Casas is a visit to the Sumidero Canyon.
Excursion to Sumidero Canyon
The Sumidero Canyon is located 6 km from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, within a National Park that conserves different animal species such as crocodiles and monkeys, which can be seen during the tour. The canyon rises over the Grijalva River, and its walls reach over a thousand meters in height.
From Tuxtla Gutiérrez, visitors can access the canyon’s viewpoints, where excellent panoramic views can be enjoyed.
Boat Tour of the Canyon
To fully appreciate the canyon's beauty, a boat tour is required. The tour takes approximately two hours and ends at the Manuel Moreno Torres hydroelectric dam. During the tour, guides provide information about the geography of the area and point out various animals for photo opportunities (crocodiles, monkeys, herons, iguanas).
The boats accommodate 15 or 20 people and are equipped with all necessary safety measures.
How to Get to Sumidero Canyon
Independently: From San Cristóbal de las Casas, you can take a bus to Tuxtla Gutiérrez and then head to the boat docks. Boat tours are offered there.
Through Travel Agency Excursions: This is the most recommended option, as it usually costs the same or less than going independently, and you save time. Plus, the excursion includes an extra one-hour visit to the colonial town of Chiapa de Corzo.
