A visit to Oventic is highly recommended for those interested in understanding the Zapatista reality in the State of Chiapas.

The autonomous community of Oventic is one of the five Zapatista Good Government Councils (EZLN) and can be visited after presenting valid identification (ID or passport) at the entrance.

Oventic is a community under Zapatista influence, enclosed within private land governed by autonomous laws and regulations.

How to Get to Oventic

Oventic is located a few kilometers from San Andrés Larráinzar, about 65 km from San Cristóbal de las Casas. To reach it, you can take one of the shared vans ("combis") departing from the market area of San Cristóbal, which pass by the entrance gate of the Oventic community.

Visiting Oventic

Due to government pressure and attacks from paramilitary groups, the Zapatistas are very cautious. The Oventic site is guarded by Zapatista guards, who welcome visitors at a gate that remains closed to outsiders. Visitors must introduce themselves, present valid identification (passport or ID), and provide personal details. Once granted entry, visitors are guided through the facilities, including the school, hospital, and cooperatives where handicrafts are sold.

Conclusion

The Zapatistas are not very open to conversation, and the tour usually lasts just a few minutes. However, visiting Oventic is highly recommended for those who want to experience the current reality of the EZLN firsthand.
